Top 5 FREE VOIP providers for International Calls

Today i am going to jot down my TOP 5 VOIP providers for making FREE international calls. The list is purely prepared by me based on my personal experience and its not influenced by any service provider.

1) VOIPcheap - This is the original VOIPcheap and not the UK version of this company. Although VOIPbuster, voipcheap.co.uk uses the same software, i found this software more reliable and voice quality is of high level. This is an straight winner when it comes to making FREE calls worldwide. You can virtually call more than 50 countries on normal PSTN landlines and mobiles in singapore, USA, HK & Canada. With some hacks, you can call from countries which are not listed in FREE list but you have a work around. Check my earlier post for that hack.

Benefits: Clear voice, You can make calls from your PC. No need to buy any credits from them before making free calls. Allows PC or Phone to intiate call (via Directdial)

Drawbacks: really none.

2) Jajah: I tried jajah about 1 month back and with their FREE minutes i made calls to India. The difference between jajah and other VOIP providers is Jajah only allows you to make calls from your phone. That means You need to give your phone number and your calling party number before you can make a call. When you intiate a call Jajah first connect your phone. You pick up the call and then jajah connects to the other party.

Benefits: No software download needed. Just visit their site. No credits needed for free calls.
Drawbacks: Have to use a legitimate number before calling. Cant use PC to make call.

3) Gizmo : Popularly known as " Skype Killer". This software lets you call anyone in more than 60 countries. The only downside is that you and other party both should be registered with Gizmo and should also register your numbers. I am sure that this project will be successful and in short time the daatabase of people will be built and then its a FREE calling world.

Benefits: Making calls is easier than ever, Killer Application interface,
Drawbacks: Requires both parties to register their numbers with Gizmo.

4) Raketu- Pretty decent service which offers FREE calls to 42 countries. I am rating it higher than VOIPbuster/Discount for the very reason thats its not a clone and it uses a diff technology than skype. Skype uses Supernodes which can be vulnerable to hacking. I covered that issues in my blog earlier. Additionally it integrates with Yahoo, MSN messengers etc.

Benefits: Better technology, Clear Voice, 42 countries FREE, Integrate with other messengers
Drawbcks- Haven't found any yet.

5) VOIPBuster/VOIPDiscount: Both these companies are a total rip-off from VOIPcheap. even their softwares are identical and i wonder they are all one company with different websites and company name. But sorry to say they suck at the voice quality. They offer the same service as
VOIPcheap.

Benefits:1 or more additional countries (Thailand + mobile) on Voipdiscount.
Drawbacks: Low voice quality

Looking for Free Pc to Phone Calls?

Go to VoipBuster, a Betamax group VoIP provider. It lets you make pc to landline calls to 32 countries free.  The only thing to do is to download the application, register your account and make a credit deposit.
Buying credit entitles you to 120 "Freedays". This means you can call, for a period of 120 days (unless stated otherwise), all destinations marked as "Free" for free! When you have run out of Freedays, you can call these destinations at a minimal rate.
The other condition is maximum 300 minutes per week of free pc to phone calls, measured over the last 7 days. If limit is exceeded, a minimal rate is charged.
If you deposit Euro 10, this works out to Euro 0.083 a day to make free calls to 32 destinations. Or work out the charge per minute and see if it isn't better than free way to make pc to phone calls.
The deal gets even sweeter if you consider that you can use your credit to make calls to non-free destinations. Moreover you don't have to earn free minutes here which costs you internet service charges if nothing else. Add up all the factors and draw your own conclusions.
(Number of free countries and freedays is correct at the time of updating this page (Nov. 14, 2006). These and other terms and conditions may be altered anytime by the VoIP providers so please refer to the site for the latest info.)
Other Betamax Free VoIP Providers

Netappel, Poivy VoipStunt and Free Call.

GizmoCall - Web Browser Based Free Call

GizmoCall a SIPphone service has launched a new web-based voice-over-IP (VoIP) service that will allow users making phone calls directly from their web browser. It all based on Flash.

I wonder how many other websites do that. It doesnt seem Jajah used Flash. However, I am not able to find any real difference in using Flash Plugin to make a call. I will do some study and testing and will post some results.

Back to the news, The web based interface allows the users to enter the enter in international format such as (+12221112121) and then click Call. If you dont have a flash plug-in installed (first time users), then it will ask you to install the plug-in. Just install and it will automatically recognise it. Then the call is sent out to the number you wanted to call.

You need to use headphones (or speaker) and mic to talk.

According to the website, Users get five minutes of calling per day to just about any phone number and can double that if they register with an email address. For more calls, users can purchase Call Out minutes. Besides PSTN phones they can call for free google talk users, Windows Live users, Gizmo Project users and any other SIP address/device.

Was using "betamax" for making cheap calls your worst nightmare? If we make a poll, more than 70% would say I am fed up of Betamax. Till date, there was really no solid alternative to Betamax,so people just stuck to them. However, today I am going to post one solid alternative which will make you uninstall your betamax softphone :-)

I often receive emails from blog readers about "What is the best VOIP Service to call India , Middle East, Australia or UK or take any other country for that matter". I advice them on using a VOIP service which has following:

1) Good Voice Quality
2) Competitive Calling Rates
3) Customer Support
4) Ease of Use (No jokes, over 60% first time users have no clue how to use the softphone)

Now I don't have to reiterate that Betamax doesn't qualify on any of these "prerequisites" besides the rates probably. However, whats the use of a cheap calling service if you don't have good quality and horrible customer service. When was the last time, you ever heard from betamax?

Now Lets talk about what we found, a new VOIP service from Netherlands which truly fits in our "4" pre-requisites.

Its called Fastvoip. FastVoip is based in netherlands and it does look very similar to Betamax, its not owned by them or even dellmont sarl for that matter.

I have been using FastVoip since last week and my experience has been great. Fastvoip offers solid voice quality and their customer service is top-notch. Send them a question and then should reply within 24 hours top.

FastVoip currently offers €1 cent per minute to India (Landline + Mobile) and for VOIPGuide readers, there is more to cheer. You can apply Promo code, "VOIPGUIDES09" at the buy credits page to get 25% extra credits. So if you buy €10 credits, you would €12.50. This means your effective calling rate to India drops to €0.075 cents, which is the best rate to call India right now.

UPDATE:
1) Please note that VAT issue is fixed now so from now on, if you live outside europe, VAT won't be charged to you.

2) FastVoip has given €5 euro (€2 VAT charge+ €3 Extra Credits) free credit to those who were charged the VAT. This should be applied to your account automatically. So those who paid the VAT are lucky :-)

3) No start rate for client and local access number (betamax charges 5 cent for local access number). This rate is now waived off by Fastvoip.

Fastvoip also offers full support for SIP. you can use the following settings for your SIP Phone/VOIP Adapter/SIP Softphone.

Username: yourusername@fastvoip.com
Password: yourpassword
Domain: fastvoip.com
Proxy: sip.fastvoip.com

For all those people who like to connect with other people (besides facebook), there is a cool way to find other people on Fastvoip and make calls to them for free via PC to PC option on FastVoip Softphone.

If you on the move, you can also use FastVoip via Local access numbers available in over 50 countries. FastVoip also offers a SMS service.

FastVoip developers told us that they have lot more in the pipeline like using your own phone number as Caller ID for making calls out, so people know who called them. FastVoip will also be working on getting calling rates to India down to 0.05 cents in near future.

I strongly recommend everyone to give FastVoip a try and Let us know your feedback.
